Korean Air has officially launched free Starlink-powered Wi-Fi aboard selected flights, promising passengers an internet connection capable of supporting far more than basic messaging.
The service went live on the 15th September 2026 and is available to passengers in every cabin, including Economy. There is no requirement to purchase a Wi-Fi package or hold elite status with Korean Air’s SKYPASS loyalty programme.
However, only four aircraft have received the necessary equipment for the initial launch. That means most Korean Air passengers will continue to encounter the airline’s existing connectivity arrangements until the wider installation programme gathers pace.
Which Korean Air aircraft have Starlink?
Korean Air has initially fitted Starlink equipment to:
Three Airbus A350-900s
One Boeing 777-300ER
These aircraft will primarily operate medium and long-haul services to destinations in North America, Europe and Southeast Asia. Korean Air says they may also appear on some shorter flights.
The airline has not published a permanent list of Starlink routes. Its aircraft move between destinations, while last-minute substitutions can place a differently equipped aircraft onto a scheduled service.
Passengers should therefore not assume that every flight operated by an Airbus A350 or Boeing 777-300ER will include Starlink. At launch, it is the individual aircraft that matters, not simply the aircraft type displayed during booking.
Korean Air plans to install the system aboard most of its operating fleet by the end of 2027. Until then, passengers are likely to experience a mixture of Starlink-equipped aircraft, aircraft using Korean Air’s existing paid internet service and aircraft without connectivity.

Is Korean Air’s Starlink Wi-Fi free?
Yes. Korean Air is making Starlink available free of charge in First Class, Prestige Class and Economy.
Passengers will not need to create an account. After placing their device into flight mode, they can connect to the aircraft’s Wi-Fi network and visit the Korean Air Wi-Fi portal.
They will then be asked to enter the passenger name and seat number shown on their boarding pass. Access will be provided after watching an advertisement.
This is considerably simpler than systems requiring passengers to register for a loyalty programme, enter payment details or select between several speed-based packages.
Korean Air has not announced a data cap or separate speed restrictions for Economy passengers.
What can passengers use it for?
Korean Air says the new connection is suitable for activities including:
Streaming films and television programmes
Listening to music
Browsing websites
Using messaging and social-media applications
Watching news and sports
Playing online games
Sending files
Accessing cloud-based workplace tools
Starlink uses a network of satellites operating in low Earth orbit. These orbit much closer to the Earth than traditional geostationary satellites, potentially reducing the delay between sending and receiving data.
In practical terms, the system should feel closer to a ground-based internet connection than many older inflight Wi-Fi products.
Actual performance may still depend on the route, satellite coverage and the number of passengers using the connection simultaneously. A service capable of supporting video streaming during a lightly loaded test flight may perform differently when hundreds of passengers are connected.

Video calls and livestreaming will be restricted
Although the system is technically capable of supporting live video, Korean Air will restrict internet-based voice and video calls.
Passengers will also be prevented from broadcasting livestreams through social-media platforms.
The restrictions are intended to protect the onboard environment and address aviation security concerns. Access to illegal or potentially unsafe websites may also be blocked.
Preventing calls is a sensible decision. Faster inflight internet is useful, but a cabin filled with passengers conducting video meetings or holding telephone conversations would quickly become unpleasant.
Travellers will still be able to use messaging services, watch downloaded or streamed content and carry out most online work.
What happens on aircraft without Starlink?
Korean Air says aircraft that have not yet been converted will temporarily retain the airline’s existing paid Wi-Fi policy.
This creates an important distinction for passengers. Two Korean Air flights sold under the same fare conditions may offer very different connectivity depending on the aircraft assigned.
A passenger travelling on one of the four converted aircraft could receive high-speed internet free of charge, while someone on another service may need to pay for a slower or more restricted package.
This inconsistency should gradually diminish as the installation programme progresses. Nevertheless, completing most of the fleet by the end of 2027 gives Korean Air more than a year to carry out the work.
Passengers booking specifically because they need connectivity should not rely on it for essential work. Aircraft changes, technical faults and coverage interruptions remain possible even when Starlink is scheduled to be available.

How does Korean Air compare with Qatar Airways?
Qatar Airways was among the earliest major long-haul airlines to commit to a substantial Starlink rollout.
Its service is free and available from gate to gate where local regulations allow. Qatar Airways has prioritised its Boeing 777 fleet before expanding installation to other aircraft, including the Airbus A350.
This gives Qatar an important head start. A much larger proportion of its long-haul operation is already equipped, making it easier for passengers to select a flight with a reasonable expectation that Starlink will be available.
Korean Air’s decision to make the service free is equally passenger-friendly, but an initial fleet of just four aircraft means the practical benefit remains limited.

airBaltic helped prove the concept in Europe
airBaltic became the first European airline to introduce Starlink, initially aboard its Airbus A220-300 fleet.
Its relatively uniform operation gives it an advantage: airBaltic uses only the A220-300 for passenger services, whereas Korean Air operates numerous aircraft types with different existing connectivity systems.
Like Korean Air, airBaltic offers Starlink without charging passengers or requiring the purchase of a separate internet package.
The airline’s rollout demonstrated how dramatically reliable connectivity can change the experience aboard shorter European flights. Passengers can work, stream content or remain connected even when the journey lasts only a couple of hours.
Korean Air now faces the more demanding challenge of providing consistent performance across long-haul flights lasting ten hours or more.
Could Starlink make seatback entertainment unnecessary?
Fast internet allows passengers to access their own streaming subscriptions and entertainment libraries, but it is unlikely to replace Korean Air’s seatback screens in the immediate future.
Not every passenger carries a suitable device, and personal phones and tablets rely on battery power. Some travellers also prefer to disconnect rather than use their own equipment throughout a flight.
Streaming services may apply geographical restrictions, while not every passenger will have subscriptions to the same platforms. Korean Air’s onboard entertainment system therefore remains an important part of the experience.
The combination of a seatback screen and free high-speed Wi-Fi is arguably the better proposition. A passenger can watch the airline’s entertainment while using a phone or laptop for messaging, browsing or checking the progress of the flight.
The Flight Edit verdict
Korean Air’s decision to make Starlink free in every cabin is excellent news for passengers.
There are no paid packages to compare, no premium-cabin restriction and no compulsory loyalty membership. Entering a name and seat number is straightforward, although having to watch an advertisement introduces a small barrier before connecting.
The major limitation is availability. Three Airbus A350-900s and one Boeing 777-300ER represent only a tiny proportion of Korean Air’s fleet, so most passengers should not expect Starlink immediately.
The airline would help customers by identifying equipped aircraft more clearly within its booking and flight-status systems. Until that happens, passengers may not know whether they will receive free Starlink until an individual aircraft is allocated.
Completing most of the fleet by the end of 2027 will be a substantial undertaking. If Korean Air delivers that programme on schedule, free streaming-quality internet could become one of its strongest passenger benefits. For now, however, receiving it will involve a considerable element of luck.
